To explore even a fraction of Indonesia's richness, we recommend a stay of at least two weeks. However, if time permits, a month or more will allow you to fully immerse yourself in the archipelago's culture and landscapes.

As a French traveler, you'll need a passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended return date and a tourist visa to enter Indonesia. Blank pages in your passport are essential for the authorities to affix the visa and entry/exit stamps.

The official language of Indonesia is Bahasa Indonesia, a variant of Malay. However, due to the archipelago's cultural diversity, hundreds of regional languages are also spoken throughout the country. As a visitor, you'll find that most Indonesians, especially in tourist areas, speak basic English, which makes communication easier. However, learning a few words and phrases in Bahasa Indonesia can greatly enrich your travel experience and show your respect for the local culture.

Selamat pagi: Good morning (morning)

Selamat siang: Good morning (afternoon)

Selamat malam: Good evening (evening)

Maaf: Excuse me / Pardon

By using these basic words, you can show respect and openness to the locals, which can often lead to warmer, more rewarding interactions.

The official currency of Indonesia is the Indonesian rupiah (IDR). At the time of writing, 1 euro is equivalent to around 16,000 Indonesian rupiahs. It's advisable to exchange your money at banks or authorized exchange offices to get the best exchange rate. Also make sure you have cash on you, as many small traders and markets don't accept bank cards.

Indonesia enjoys a tropical climate with two main seasons: the dry season (April to October) and the rainy season (November to March). The best time to visit depends on the region you wish to explore, but generally, the dry season is more favorable for outdoor activities.

Indonesian cuisine is a veritable explosion of flavors, influenced by a combination of spices, fresh ingredients and traditional cooking techniques. Among the signature dishes, nasi goreng stands out for its fried rice sautéed in an aromatic soy sauce, accompanied by vegetables, eggs and sometimes meat or seafood.

Satays, marinated and grilled meat skewers, are another specialty enjoyed throughout the country. Usually served with a sweet and spicy peanut sauce. Rendang, meanwhile, is a Sumatran must. This beef curry simmered slowly in coconut milk and a blend of spices reveals rich flavors.

In general, there's a time difference of 6 to 8 hours between Indonesia and France, depending on the season and in the region you're visiting.
