Malta and Gozo: nature, history and the authentic Mediterranean

Gozo, the unspoilt island of wild landscapes

First stop on the trip, Gozo seduces with itspeaceful atmosphereand authentic character. Greener and more rural than Malta, it's ideal for nature lovers andgentle hikers. Ocre cliffs plunging into the sea, secluded bays, coastal paths and Mediterranean panoramas make up a spectacular backdrop. Gozo is also aland of history with the temples of Ġgantija, among the oldest religious monuments in the world, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cittadella de Victoria, perched at the heart of the island, offers a breathtaking view of the entire territory.
Malta, crossroads of civilizations

Returning to the main island, Malta reveals anexceptional cultural wealth. Valletta, the fortified capital built by the Knights of the Order of St. John, impresses with itsBaroque architecture,hanging gardens andemblematicmonuments. Day 1

MALTA - GOZO

(42 km - 1h30 drive, 45 minutes by ferry)

On arrival at Malta airport, collect your car and head for the port of Cirkewwa.

Departure from Malta for Gozoen ferry (please note that the ferry ticket is not included).

When you arrive, go to your hotel and check in. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure.

Spend the night in Gozo at the hotel (Standard Car Group C): San Andrea 3* (or similar).

Day 2

GOZO

Today you can pack your comfortable shoes for an easy but impressive walk along the south coast of this island, starting from the small town of Mgarr ix-xini, then heading up the ochre-colored cliffs to the picturesque bays.

Between autumn and late spring, Gozo's countryside comes to life, revealing an incredible wealth of flora and fauna, including colorful wildflowers and fragrant herbs. With a temperate Mediterranean climate where sunshine and warmth are the norm even in winter, Gozo is perfect for off-season hiking vacations.

This easy walking tour will take around an hour and a half, giving you enough of an appetite to head to the small village of Xlendi for a well-earned lunch if you wish.

Xlendi is a small tourist resort in southwest Gozo. Once a small fishing village, the bay is fringed by high cliffs that attract large crowds all year round. A 17th-century tower stands atop the cliffs, adding to the charm of the place.

Day 3

GOZO

Start your day at the temples of Ggantija, the oldest free-standing open-air temples in the world. The site is one of the most important archaeological sites on the Maltese islands and is on UNESCO's World Heritage List. The site comprises two temples dating from 3600 to 3200 BC.

Afterwards, you can head inland to the old public outhouse still in use at Fontana Cottage, where you can also buy some locally-made souvenirs. Gozo is famous for its lace-making.

Afterwards, you can visit Cittadella, a historic fortified town with a magnificent view over the island.

After visiting Cittadella, continue on to the capital Victoria, then descend to visit Dwejra Bay, where you can explore the area's many caves (optional boat trip available at extra cost, weather permitting).

You can then head west to the famous sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of 'Ta Pinu, Gozo's most visited spiritual church.

Your Gozo island experience can be rounded off by a visit to two of the island's unique landmarks, Wied il Mielah, a natural limestone arch offering spectacular views over the Mediterranean, before ending the day at the Xwejni salt marshes, still a family-run business today.

Day 4

MALTA/SLIEMA

(45 km - 1h30 drive, 45 minutes by ferry)

Enjoy your last breakfast at the hotel in Gozo and, at the appointed time, head for the port of Mgarr to catch a ferry to Malta.

On arrival, go to your hotel and check in (please note that ferry services are not included, payable at the port of Mgarr on departure).

Spend the night in the Saint-Julian/Sliema area at the hotel (Standard Car Group C): Plaza Regency 3* (or similar)

Day 5

SLIEMA - LA VALETTE - SLIEMA

(15 km - 30 minutes)

Today, we invite you to explore Valletta on foot. You'll be amazed by its culture, beauty and charm. Often dubbed "the city built by men for men", Malta's capital offers both culture and relaxation.

You can start your day with a 30-minute gondola cruise around the port.

You can then visit the Upper Barrakka gardens with the elevator.

At midday, you can enjoy Gun Salut in the gardens of Upper Barrakka with a magnificent panoramic view of the Grand Port and the 3 towns of Senglea, Vittoriosa and Cospicua.

From the Upper Barrakka Gardens, you can follow a 1.5-hour walking tour that includes Valletta's Castille Palace, the Parliament Building and the entrance to the St. John of Malta Cathedral, one of the Maltese islands' main attractions, boasting a wealth of ornate features, including stone wall motifs and a painted vaulted ceiling. One of the most famous works of art in all of Europe can be found here: Caravaggio's "Beheading of St. John the Baptist".

A 15-minute walk will take you to the Malta Experience show. The Malta Experience is an audiovisual show that tells the dramatic story of the islands' 7,000-year history. Educational, informative and entertaining, the show traces the turbulent history of a small island nation that overcame almost unimaginable obstacles to survive and prosper. The Knights of St. John of Malta are famous for repelling invasion and for their military exploits abroad. But their origins were actually those of peace and caring for the sick. This noble past is revealed during a visit to "La Sacra Infermeria" (Holy Infirmary).

Day 6

SLIEMA - BRIDGE - SLIEMA

(20 km - 1 hour)

Today, we suggest a visit to Mosta, a central city famous for its basilica. The basilica's dome is the third largest unsupported dome in Europe. It was built in the 18th century and became famous in 1942 when, during the Second World War, a bomb pierced the dome without exploding, sparing the lives of 300 people.

Your next stop may be Ta' Qali, also known as the craft village. Here, you'll visit the Mdina glassworks to watch local craftsmen blow elaborate glass works of art. It's the ideal place to buy unique souvenirs. Continue your tour with a visit to the ancient capital of "Mdina", with its old Baroque buildings, cathedral and magnificent ramparts dominating the rural skyline.

During your stay in Mdina, you can visit the 17th-century masterpiece of St. Paul's Cathedral, designed by the famous Lorenzo Gafa.

Day 7

SLIEMA - VITTORIOSA AND MARSAXLOKK - BLUE CAVE - SLIEMA

(45 km - 1h30)

You can start by driving to one of the 3 famous southern cities.

You stop at Vittoriosa, also known as "Birgu", one of the oldest settlements on the Maltese islands. From Vittoriosa, you can continue south to the fishing village of Marsaxlokk. fishing village of Marsaxlokk. This picturesque village is famous for the many colorful Maltese fishing boats known as "Dhajsa" moored in the harbor. On Sundays, the village becomes popular for its seaside market.

After lunch, you can head off to the small village of "Wied iz Zurrieq", which boasts a formation of caves, one of which is popularly known as the "Blue Cave".

Visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of the "Hagar Qim Temples", a unique architectural masterpiece. The temples stand atop a hill overlooking the sea and the islet of Filfla.

Finish the day with a visit to the magnificent Dingli cliffs, the highest point on the Maltese islands at over 250 metres above sea level.

Day 8

DEPARTURE FROM SLIEMA
