Siem Reap and the treasures of Angkor

Your stay begins in Siem Reap, gateway to the legendary site of Angkor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As soon as you arrive, a lively evening discovery introduces you to local life. Over the following days, explore Angkor's jewels by tuk-tuk: Angkor Wat, an architectural masterpiece, Angkor Thom, the mysterious Bayon and the fascinating Ta Prohm, entwined by giant cheese tree roots. Each visit reveals the spiritual and artistic grandeur of the Khmer empire.
Local life, nature and Cambodian traditions

This Cambodia tour puts the emphasis on authenticity and sharing. By electric scooter, set off to meet the inhabitants of the countryside, discover rural traditions and be introduced to Khmer cuisine. Sailing on the Tonle Sap Lake, Southeast Asia's largest lake, offers a striking glimpse of life on the water, between floating villages and ancestral fishing techniques.

Day 1

FRANCE - SIEM REAP

Flight to Siem Reap. Overnight on board.

Day 2

SIEM REAP

Meet your guide at the airport and depart for downtown Siem Reap.

This small village nestled in the meandering river that bears its name is just a few kilometers from the Angkor archaeological site.

First immersion in local life with "Siem Reap by night"! We invite you on a colorful journey to the heart of Siem Reap. Located along the river, around the old market, it's the place to be for Cambodians in the evening after work. It's where families come to have a good time, and enjoy a few dishes as an aperitif. Wander through the stalls, sampling whatever takes your fancy.

The evening continues with a traditional meal in the stall of one of the countless "Beer Gardens", another popular place for Cambodians to relax.

Day 3

SIEM REAP - ANGKOR

Departure by Tuk-Tuk to discover the famous Angkor Wat temple, Cambodia's most prestigious monument, comparable in size to Beijing's Forbidden City. It reproduces in the human world the symbolism of Mount Meru, seat of the celestial abode of the divinities.

Continue to the Preah Khan temple, wander through a maze of doors to reach some of the sculptural treasures spared by time.

Discover the great royal city of Angkor Thom. After admiring the city's enigmatic gates, you reach the Bayon, the central temple of this fortified city. At first glance, this mysterious temple is a jumble of blackened stones, then a tangle of some fifty towers with faces, which becomes clearer the closer you get.

Then, weather permitting, a non-stop tour of the various monuments, including the Baphuon, one of the largest restoration projects ever undertaken by France, followed by the Phimeanakas in the Royal Palace enclosure, and ending at the Terrace of the Elephants, where the king and his court used to watch the games and processions.

In the late afternoon, return to the hotel and enjoy a sunset over the temples, a spectacle of color and light.

Day 4

SIEM REAP - TONLE SAP

Morning discovery of the countryside on an electric scooter (approx. 25 km without difficulty).

Stop with a Cambodian family to discover their way of life and rural traditions.

Nearby, visit a pagoda to understand the strong ties that have united the Khmers with the Buddhist religion for over 1,000 years.

Arrive at your final destination and taste a coconut freshly picked by the family practicing basketry. Initiation to the preparation of typical dishes, such as green mango salad, amok or traditional soup.

Lunch of your own preparations.

You leave your scooters here and continue by vehicle through flooded, fertile areas to reach Lake Tonlé Sap, Southeast Asia's largest lake. Sail on a wooden boat (approx. 1h30) to discover the lake, its floating houses, fishing techniques, fishponds and crocodile farms.

Return to Siem Reap.

Dinner in a restaurant serving local specialities.

Day 5

SIEM REAP - PHNOM KULEN - SIEM REAP - ANGKOR

Early departure for the hill of Phnom Kulen, the sacred mountain of the Khmers.

On arrival, you take the dirt and sand track through cashew plantations to reach some of the remains of the ancient city of Mahendraparvata, the city of Jayavarman II. The site of Srah Dumrei, with its sandstone monoliths representing animals lost in the jungle, is sure to surprise you.

Over an arid plateau, you reach the pagoda of Wat Preah Kraal before being transferred by vehicle along a track to the village of Preah Ang Thom, famous for its waterfall and its nearly 8 m long rock-sculpted reclining Buddha, the largest in Cambodia.

In the afternoon, enjoy a swim at the waterfall, a popular spot with locals, before discovering the river sculpted with Hindu religious symbols (lingas and yonis appear according to water level).

Dinner and overnight at a local's home in Angkor.

Day 6

SIEM REAP - ANGKOR - PHNOM KULEN - SIEM REAP

After breakfast, you'll set off to visit the temples of the grand circuit, starting with the small temple of Ba Chum before arriving at Sras Srang from where you'll visit Banteay Kdey.

Finally, you'll discover the Ta Prohm temple, famous for its stone-encircling cheese trees. Also famous for being the location of Angelina Jolie's film Tom Raider, filmed here 24 years ago.

Lunch in a restaurant facing Sras Srang.

In the afternoon, return to your vehicle to visit Banteay Samré and the secret temple of Chao Say Vibol. This is the location of another film, 2003's Les Deux Frères, by director Jean-Jacques Annaud.

At the end of the day, climb the 635-step Phnom Bok hill to watch the sun set over the surrounding countryside.

Return to hotel.

Day 7

SIEM REAP - SAMBOR PREI KUK - KOMPONG THOM

Drive to the pre-Angkorian temples of Sambor Prei Kuk, originally called Içanapura: the first capital of the Great Lake region.

The city is the most important of the pre-Angkorian sites, with some sixty listed monuments.

Walk through the forest to reach the 3 groups of brick towers with rich architectural decorations.

Continuation to the town of Kampong Thom.

Stop en route to climb the steps leading to the pagoda at the top of Phnom Santuk hill. This pilgrimage site, popular with Cambodians since Angkorian times, is populated by monkeys.

Take a pleasant stroll among the monuments and sculpted caves and enjoy the view over the surrounding countryside.

Day 8

KOMPONG THOM - PHNOM PENH

Departure for Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia.

Along the way, we stop to discover a local specialty: fried mygales from the village of Skun. Mountains of tarantulas are presented to the gourmets!

Phnom Penh, or the remains of the pearl of Southeast Asia, surprises with its current dynamism and the exuberance of its new buildings. Here you'll find the country's administrative and economic heart, alongside thousand-year-old symbols of royalty and Buddhism. Phnom Penh has many facets, from its colonial past to its historical links with China.

Visit the Royal Palace and its many buildings, and the Silver Pagoda, with its floor paved with 500 silver blocks weighing 1kg each, home to frescoes inspired by the Ramayana and other treasures of the crown, as well as a fine collection of Buddhas.

End of day and dinner at leisure (breakfast and lunch included).

Day 9

PHNOM PENH

Depart by road for Koh Dach, also known as Silk Island. This small island on the Mekong offers a peaceful, bucolic setting.

After a boat transfer, take a seat in a Tuk-Tuk or on a bicycle to catch a glimpse of traditional life in a rural setting, bustling with weavers, farmers and more. Stroll through the local market before passing the village elementary school and visiting a local soya milk pancake factory.

Continuing on to the Killing Fields, a historic site bearing witness to the chapter in Cambodian history when the Khmer Rouge ruled the country.

At the end of the day, visit the Russian market, renowned for the diversity of its wares. You'll find everything from antiques to spices and designer clothes.

Options (optional at extra charge) : Dinner cruise (non-private). Slow navigation takes you to the intersection of the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers in the center of this illuminated city.
